2026 First meeting

February 2026.

2026 Season Kick-off: A New Committee and a Tribute to Our Roots

Our first meeting of the year was a powerful gathering of history, community spirit, and a look toward the future. It was a day of transition as we bid farewell to outgoing leadership and welcomed a new committee to guide TASA through 2026.

A Legacy of Leadership

Ms. Tanya Aysen Kaplan OAM

The meeting opened with an address by our steward, Ms. Tanya Aysen Kaplan OAM. Tanya, who revitalized the association six years ago, reminded us that while TASA has been officially registered since 1979, its roots in South Australia run deep. She highlighted our prestigious role in local history, particularly our annual invitation to march with the ANZACs—a tradition that keeps the Turkish community visible and respected.

We shared a heartfelt thank you to Berna Kardes, our 2025 President, as she stepped down from her role. Her dedication, alongside the previous committee, has kept the association thriving.

Peter Goers OAM

Reflections from our Patron, Peter Goers OAM

Our Patron, Peter Goers OAM, delivered a moving speech reflecting on his lifelong bond with the Turkish people. Having lived in Istanbul (Erenköy) for three years, Peter spoke of his deep respect for the “Kemalist” spirit of TASA, which he believes is a vital part of Australia’s multicultural fabric.

“In many ways, TASA is Ayşen and Ayşen is TASA… she has been for many decades a leader of the Turkish community in South Australia.”

He shared a lighter moment from his time in Turkey, recounting the day he was asked to step in as a tour guide at the Beylerbeyi Palace after the official guide called in sick. Peter’s message was clear: TASA is a “jewel box” of a community that must continue to reach out to the next generation of Turkish

Election Results: The 2026 Committee

Following the speeches, we held our official vote. To ensure the association remains agile and decisive, we structured the committee to ensure an odd number of members (9 total) to prevent tie-votes during important decisions.

The following positions were filled by consensus:

  • Executive Board: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.
  • General Committee: Five additional members dedicated to community outreach and decision-making.

As no positions were contested, the transition was smooth, reflecting the unity of our members.
